ROCKFORD — The St. Marys boys basketball team headed into the new year on a high note once again.
The Roughriders evened up their record for the season and won the Chatt Insurance Holiday Tournament at Parkway for the third straight year with a 71-62 victory over the host Panthers on Friday night.
“We’re 4-4 and it’s a good way to finish the end of the year,” St. Marys head coach Dan Hegemier said.
FT. LORAMIE — The New Bremen Cardinals basketball team used their speed and depth to pull away from the Ft. Loramie Redskins in the fourth quarter for a 58-39 victory Friday evening at Ft. Loramie.
“Our conditioning and ability to play a lot of kids put us over the hump in the second quarter tonight,” Cardinals head coach Adam Dougherty said. “Our depth was a big factor in the game tonight.”

SPENCERVILLE — Victories like the one his team put up on Friday night over New Knoxville thrilled Spencerville head coach Kevin Sensabaugh a year ago as he shepherded an inexperienced group of players from a five-win team two seasons ago to a squad that was a win away from the regional tournament in 2011.
MINSTER — Minster erased a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat Botkins 56-50 on Friday night.
“I wasn’t feeling pretty good after the first 16 minutes, but our kids found a little bit of gut, grit, determination, whatever you want to call it. They stuck together, things started to go right,” said Minster head coach Mike Lee. “We hit a few shots and then it’s a matter of the confidence level raising, and we needed to see that.”
Virginia Mae Carter, 80, of 704 Devonshire Drive, Celina, died at 2:40 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at Mercer County Community Hospital.
Funeral rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, St. Marys, the Rev. Bill Maki, officiant. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call from 11:00 A.M. until the time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent to the family via Millerfuneralhomes.net.

ST. MARYS — Local councilors recognized those who are leaving their city duties during their last meeting of the year Friday evening.
St. Marys City Councilors passed three resolutions of appreciation during their Friday night meeting, recognizing Todd Fleagle, Michael Kleinhenz and Greg Freewalt.
"It's been a pleasure working with them," Law Director Kraig Noble said.
"I'm looking forward to seeing them around the community, and I know they'll still be interested in what goes on in the community."
ST. MARYS — With the arrival of the new year, area residents may again choose to compete in an annual competition while working toward a healthier lifestyle.
The Grand Health Challenge and Grand Health Family Challenge, organized by The Evening Leader and the Wapakoneta Daily News in conjunction with Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, are both set to return, as weigh ins being on Jan. 3.
Lewis H. Metzger, 86, of Spencerville, died on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at the Cleveland Clinic, where he had surgery on Nov. 4.
Funeral arrangements are being completed by the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville, where friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.
Martin E. Menchhofer, 91, of 706 Magnolia Drive, St. Marys, formerly of Mercer County, died on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011, at the St. Marys Living Center.
He was born March on 15, 1920, in Mercer County, the son of John and Kathryn (Powell) Menchhofer, and they preceded him in death.
On April 12, 1942, he married Margaret “Marge” L. Hay, and she survives at the St. Marys Living Center.
