St. Marys track 3rd, 4th at Celina Relays

CELINA — The St. Marys girls track and field team took third and the Roughrider boys placed fourth at the Walt Shreffler Relays on Friday evening in Celina.

Celina swept the boys and girls titles. The Celina girls scored 110 points, outlasting second place Coldwater (94 points), St. Marys (66), Parkway (32), Rossford (22) and Waynesfield-Goshen (22).

The Bulldog boys won with 103 points ahead of second-place Coldwater (77 points), Waynesfield-Goshen (54), St. Marys (46), Parkway (42) and Rossford (20).

50 Years Ago This Week– 1963

Fifty years ago this week, the New Knoxville Rangers notched an early-season baseball victory over the Coldwater Cavaliers by a final of 9-8, in what was labeled as a hotly-disputed encounter after the teams’ scorebooks didn’t match up in the end.

ST. MARYS — George Matthews spent 23 years teaching middle school  students in Summerside, Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada, all the while broadcasting minor league, college and junior hockey.  Often Matthews lent his voice to teams for little or no money. He spent hours driving to outposts of the hockey-crazed country, only to make that long drive back home so he could get up and teach the next morning.

Minster junior Ethan Wolf announced on Twitter on Wednesday night that he has verbally committed to play college football at the University of Tennessee and new head coach Butch Jones.

“after a long hard recruiting process .. i decided to become a Tennessee Volunteer!!” Wolf tweeted on Wednesday.

New Bremen softball wins in 8th on Russell game-winning single

NEW BREMEN – The New Bremen  Cardinals softball team got a bases-loaded single from Chelsea Russell in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Cardinals a 6-5 victory over the Sidney Lehman Cavaliers Tuesday at New Bremen.

New Bremen's Bertke tosses 2-hitter to beat Roughriders

NEW BREMEN — New Bremen’s Clay Bertke went from flirtling with a perfect game against the St. Marys baseball team to being in danger of losing the lead in the top of the sixth inning with the tying runs in scoring position and nobody out.

But Bertke overpowered the next three Roughrider hitters to maintain his shutout and steer the Cardinals to a 2-0 win over St. Marys on a blustery Monday night.

New Knoxville rallies back for 8-7 win over Fairlawn

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville Rangers rallied back from a five-run deficit and then won the game on a bases loaded single by Wes Meyer in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 8-7 victory over the Fairlawn Jets Monday at New Knoxville.

“The guys never gave up in that fifth inning,” Rangers head coach Nick Schroer said. “The kids backed each other up and they never quit until the end. The guys never stop during the seven innings of play.”

Saturday Area Sports Round-Up

JACKSON CENTER — The New Knoxville baseball team blasted Jackson Center, 12-0, in five innings on Saturday morning.

Starting pitcher Jake Allen threw five shutout innings on the hill, striking out four. He also went 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks and two steals.

Michael Porter went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Spencer Wolf went 2-for-3 with a double. Adam Howe was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Shane Topp tripled, Cody Shaw walked twice and stole a base.

New Knoxville hosts Fort Loramie tonight at 5 p.m.

CELINA — The St. Marys girls track team finished fourth and the Roughrider boys were fifth at the Celina Invitational on Saturday afternoon, while  Celina swept the boys (140 points) and girls (191 points) titles in the six-team, All-WBL team event.

“Both teams did a great job, especially since we have had limited time on the track due to weather,” St. Marys head coach Kathy Sites said. “We have a long way to go, but this is an excellent starting place and good things are going to happen with these teams.”
