November 24, 2012

BATH TOWNSHIP —  Returning Midwest Athletic Conference player of the year Haley Horstman scored a game-high 20 points and the New Knoxville girls basketball team generated enough offense in the third and fourth quarters  to squeeze past the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays 37-34 on Friday in the opening game of the ninth annual Kewpee Tip-Off Classic held at Bath.

Marion Local punches ticket for return trip to title game with 3OT nailbiter

WAPAKONETA — Marion Local has tightrope walked its way to Massillon.

Jacy Goettemoeller took a pitch off right tackle, leapt over a McComb defender and burrowed his way in from seven yards out to lift a charmed Marion Local to a 34-28 win in triple overtime in a Division VI state semi-final at Wapakoneta’s Harmon Field on Friday night.

The Flyers (12-2) will play Newark Catholic on Friday, Nov. 30 at Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium with a chance to win back-to-back state crowns and earn the school’s sixth state championship.

Marion Local headed to the state's final four

November 17, 2012

WAPAKONETA — Marion Local  sophomore running back Jacy Goettemoeller fumbled away the Flyers’ first offensive snap on Friday against St. Henry. In the fourth quarter Goettemoeller scored a gamewinner by turning a 2nd and 31 draw play into a breathtaking 76-yard touchdown.

The Flyers are living and dying with a group of greenhorns.

Mostly living.

Marion Local holds off late-charging Minster, 41-34

PIQUA — Marion Local kept trying to drive the stake into Minster’s heart.

That took a long time in a memorable playoff shootout on Friday between Midwest Athletic Conference rivals.

Between a 44-yard reverse pass for a touchdown, a goal line stand and a 99-yard, 14-play touchdown drive, Minster answered every call in the fourth quarter in its quest to come back from a 21-point deficit.

The Wildcats simply ran out of time. Never heart.

Volleyball: Marion Local a win away from another state title

November 10, 2012

FAIRBORN — Buckeye Central head coach Bill Bonham didn’t wait until Saturday to proclaim a volleyball state champion in Division IV.

He’d already seen the Marion Local Flyers up close on Friday wield three unstoppable hitters to a three-game sweep in a state semi-final.

Bonham doesn’t see anyone having an answer for what the Flyers can put on the court. He said he expected Marion Local to hoist its fourth state title trophy in six years on Saturday.

Hey, I Remember That!: A look back at area sports 10, 25 and 50 years ago

50 Years Ago This Week – 1962

Fifty years ago this week, the St. Marys Roughriders concluded the 1962 football campaign by nearly upsetting the Western Buckeye League champion, Lima Shawnee Indians.

In a mud-caked mess, the first quarter came and went without any activity on the scoreboard.  That all changed in the second period when St. Marys received a punt from Shawnee and returned it 25 yards to the 10-yard line.

Minster plays Marion Local for third straight playoffs

November 8, 2012

MINSTER — Just three years ago the notion that Minster and Marion Local would become a running playoff football rivalry seemed unlikely.

The Flyers have been a model of consistency over the past 15 seasons, racking up five state championships between stints in Divisions V and VI. Minster, meanwhile, was mired in a stretch of six straight seasons without a winning record and just two seasons with a winning record in the previous 13 seasons before Nate Moore took over in 2010. Marion Local had won 11 of the last 12 meetings against Minster heading into 2010.
