The St. Marys Roughriders wrestling team defeated Defiance, 42-22 in the final Western Buckeye League meet of the season Monday.

With the win, the Roughriders (8-1) finish with the best WBL record in a season since the 2012-13 season when St. Marys also finished 8-1 that year.

The Riders’ record is the best in the league as they gear up for the WBL Championship on Saturday at Van Wert High School in hopes of winning their first league title since 1977.

On Monday, however, St. Marys not only won the regular season portion of the league, but they also had two wrestlers make history.

Seniors Austin Giesige and Tyler Miller both won their 100th career match, with Giesige (220) defeating Defiance’s Jackson Meter, 2-1, and Miller (182) pinning Mason Beauprez.

Winning via void on Monday for St. Marys was Clayton Drummond (106) and Austin Drummond (132).

Winning by a pin was Preston Wichart (138), Mason Saeler (145) and Auston McChesney (152).
Noah Vogel (170) defeated Defiance’s Brandon Grunden by a 10-4 decision.

St. Marys lost just one void at the 113-pound weight class and the 120-pound class was double voided.

Parker Encoh (126) fell to Lupe Martinez, 5-4, while Tommy Mabry (160) lost to Isaiah Diaz, 15-7.
Defiance’s Naoh Aarnett pinned David Keller (195) and Jonah Schlegel defeated Nicholas Myers, 6-2.

St. Marys will play in the WBL Championship beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at Van Wert High School.
