GIRLS BASKETBALL: Horstman's 20 points leads Rangers to Kewpee win

November 24, 2012

BATH TOWNSHIP —  Returning Midwest Athletic Conference player of the year Haley Horstman scored a game-high 20 points and the New Knoxville girls basketball team generated enough offense in the third and fourth quarters  to squeeze past the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays 37-34 on Friday in the opening game of the ninth annual Kewpee Tip-Off Classic held at Bath.

In the fourth quarter Horstman, a junior point guard,  hit a three and three baskets plus a pair of free throws for 11 points. In the game she was the leading scorer with 20 points and had four rebounds.

“Everybody should be feeding off of Horstman,” New Knoxville head coach Tim Hegemier said. “She handles the ball very well and, she can shoot the ball and drive the ball well. I think teams are going to start double teaming her or playing a box and one to mix things up to slow her down.”

The Rangers will face the Bath Wildkittens tonight in the championship game at approximately 7:30. Bath defeated Elida 44-38 in the second game.

Jessica Recker led the Blue Jays with 11 points and three rebounds.

Offensive rebounds were a big key to the Rangers victory as they out-rebounded the Blue Jays 22-16 and had 12 offensive rebounds.
