50 Years Ago This Week – 1963

This week in 1963, the New Bremen Cardinals nearly hit the century mark in an easy defeat over Cridersville.

Powered by 21 points from Fark and Froning, the Cardinals pounced on Cridersville early and never let up in a 92-37 victory.  Fledderjohn and Busse also scored in double-digits for New Bremen with 15 and 11 points respectively in a battle that started with New Bremen in command only 15-11 at the end of the first period.

The Cardinals outscored Cridersville by 16 in the second quarter to take a 42-22 advantage at intermission, and things only got better for New Bremen from there as they went on a 50-14 run in the second half to blow things wide open.

The Cardinals were also victorious in the junior varsity game, but it was much closer as they upended Cridersville, 45-44.

 25 Years Ago This Week – 1988

Twenty-five years ago this week, the New Knoxville Rangers welcomed home alumni on Homecoming Night and made the evening even sweeter with a non-league boys basketball win over the neighboring Botkins Trojans.

The fight began in back-and-forth fashion, and following eight minutes of action, everything was knotted on the scoreboard 13-13.  The Rangers pulled in front by four points late in the first half, but Botkins climbed to within two at 27-25 before the halftime horn sounded.

New Knoxville suffered from an offensive dry spell at the start of the third period and Botkins jumped ahead by four points, only to have the Rangers pull back ahead by two at the end of the stanza.  The fourth quarter rolled on with the Rangers maintaining their slim lead and hitting timely shots before eventually claiming the 53-49 victory.

Kyle Schroer was the only Ranger in double figures with ten points as his squad improved to 2-7 as the mid-point of the season approached.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2003

This week in 2002, the Minster Wildcats and New Knoxville Rangers met in a confrontation between two teams that remained unbeaten in Midwest Athletic Conference play.

The Wildcats went into the contest a perfect 10-0 at the midway point of the winter season, while the Rangers sat at 6-4 overall.  The Wildcats were 3-0 in league play, while New Knoxville was unscathed at 2-0.

The Rangers wasted little time in the first few minutes and leapt out in front 13-9 at the conclusion of the first period.  The Wildcats clawed back into it throughout the second quarter, and at intermission the teams marched to the locker rooms with the Rangers clinging to a 17-16 lead.  As exciting as the first half was, things got ugly in a hurry in the second half, as the Wildcats outscored New Knoxville, 21-10.  The Orange and Black extended their 37-27 lead throughout the final quarter and closed things out with the 51-36 victory.

Robyn Hoying and Brittany Winner paced the Wildcats with 11 and ten points respectively, while the Rangers were led offensively by Hegemier with nine points.
