A look  at what was making sports headlines in The Evening Leader in years past...

50 Years Ago This Week – 1963

Fifty years ago this week in 1963, the Yankees captured the St. Marys PONY League regular season championship by edging the Indians 6-4 in the second game of a twin bill at Memorial Field.  The Yankees didn’t clinch the championship without a little assistance from the Athletics, who pulled off an upset over the Dodgers with their 3-1 victory in the first game.  Rick Kaylor started on the mound for the Yankees, while Mike Koons hurled for the Indians.  Although Kaylor allowed just one hit in the game, his 12 walks almost spelled doom, but in the end the Yanks held on to secure the two-run victory.  It was the Yankees second straight PONY League championship, as they ended the campaign with a 10-2 record, while the Dodgers finished a game back at 9-3.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1988

This week in 1988, former St. Marys Roughrider basketball standout Kerri Goodwin, signed her national letter of intent to continue her remarkable hoops career at the University of Dayton, as it was announced by the school.  Goodwin, the younger sister of former Dayton Flyer and St. Marys Roughrider Damon Goodwin, averaged 13 points and 7.9 rebounds per game during the 1987-88 campaign.  As a junior, she hit for 16 points and ten rebounds each time on the floor and was projected to play down low for the Flyers, replacing standout Michele Kruty who was lost to graduation after a stellar career in a Dayton uniform.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2003

This week in 2003, St. Marys American Legion Post 323 baseball team watched their season come to an end with an 11-5 defeat at the hands of Van Wert in district tournament action in St. Henry.  In the two weeks prior, St. Marys defeated Van Wert with little trouble, but the third time proved to be a charm for Van Wert as they concluded St. Marys’ season with the six-run defeat.  St. Marys’ Andy Dieringer pitched seven innings for Post 323, but errors derailed his teams’ effort as they wrapped up their campaign with a 14-10 overall record.  It marked the final season of legion baseball for locals Matt Steinke and Jared Helmstetter of St. Marys.
