MAC Roundup: Cardinals Softball Inches Closer To Title

New Bremen 4, Marion Local 3

 

The New Bremen Cardinals softball team drew a little closer to a Midwest Athletic Conference title on Tuesday with a 4-3 win in extra innings against Marion Local.

 

Chloe Schwartz scored the go-ahead run — after hitting a leadoff double — on an RBI single by Alyse Clune in the top of the ninth inning.

 

Marion Local tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning with three runs as Chloe Bertke scored the first run on an RBI double by Marah Moeller, who then scored in the next at-bat with an RBI single by Sarah Fesenmyer.

 

Fensenmyer came around to score the tying run on a bunt single by Lauren Sanders.

 

Sophie Fox was the winning pitcher for the Cardinals (11-4, 5-0 MAC).

 

Clune ended the night batting 4-for-5 with three doubles and two RBIs.

 

Cassidy Smith was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. 

 

The Cardinals can clinch at least a share of the MAC title with a win against Minster on Saturday.

 

If Parkway — who defeated St. Henry on Tuesday — losses to Coldwater in a rescheduled game on Wednesday, the the Cardinals will win the MAC outright with a win on Saturday against Minster.

 

Coldwater 5, Minster 4

 

 

MINSTER — The Minster Wildcats softball team tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but could not tally two more, as the Coldwater Cavaliers defeated the Wildcats 5-4 in Midwest Athletic Conference action on Tuesday.

 

The loss, coupled with a New Bremen win against Marion Local, all but shuts the door on a MAC title chance for the Wildcats (11-10, 3-2 MAC) with two games out of first place and just two games remaining in MAC play.

 

Jenna Poeppelman took the loss for the Wildcats in eight innings of work, allowing five runs on 10 hits.

 

The Wildcats led 1-0 after four innings, but the Cavaliers (7-11, 3-1) responded in the top half of the fifth with a three-run number to take a 3-1 lead. 

 

Coldwater added one more run to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. 

 

The Wildcats tied the game with their three-run seventh to force extra innings, but Colddwater lone tally in the eighth sealed the deal.

 

Taylor Homan batted 2-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs. Alice Schmiesing batted 1-for-3 with an RBI. Danielle Barhorst and Poeppelman both recorded a pair of hits.

 

The Wildcats will travel to Versailles on Thursday. 

 

Baseball

 

Marion Local 3, New Bremen 0

 

 

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Cardinals dropped their sixth Midwest Athletic Conference contest in seven games, falling to Marion Local 3-0 on Tuesday night.

 

The Cardinals (7-10, 1-6 MAC) also suffered their second consective shut out and fourth shut out of the season.

 

Deion Heohne took the loss for New Bremen in seven innings of work, allowing three runs  — none earned — on three hits. 

 

Marion Local's (7-10, 3-4) Duane Leugers was the winning pitcher for the Flyers in six innings of shut out work, allowing just four hits and fanning five.

 

Rayn Bertke recorded a pair of singles for the Cardinals. Grant Selby, Greg Paker, Ben Schweiterman and Darrin Hays each recorded a hit.

 

The Cardinals will play Delphos St. John's on Thursday.
