Santa Claus Delivers Toys

“Leader Look Back” is a collection of stories and headlines from 75, 50 and 25 years ago this week. This week’s edition examines stories from Dec. 25-31, 1937, 1962 and 1987.

75 years ago: Santa Claus delivered Christmas gifts to 1,000 children at the Eagles Home.

Two men were killed in a collision on Ohio 219 southwest of Wapakoneta.

Employees at Star Beverage Company in Minster went on strike after protesting the discharge of a fellow employee.

Emil George, the owner of Brown Theater in Wapakoneta, filed an injunction to prevent Wapakoneta police officers and Auglaize County Sheriff William Nieter from padlocking his theater. The threat to close the theater came from George hosting “bank nights” at the theater.

A radio was installed in the vestibule of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, enabling Arthur E. Makley, the church sexton, to ring the Angelus at 6 a.m., noon and 6 p.m.

50 years ago: City officials issued a reminder that shooting BB guns within the city limits was forbidden. Officers suggested parents teach their children how to safely handle the guns.

The region was covered with a fresh blanket of snow, which made roads slick for motorists.

The Weston Wabash Foundation presented a $500 check to Joint Township Memorial Hospital. The donation was used to help pay for an isolette at the hospital.

The village of New Bremen marked a year of successes, including the purchase of a 1962 fire truck. The village’s pool also was profitable and short wave radios were purchased via the Civil Defense program.

25 years ago: Auglaize County commissioners moved to hire Alice Dewese as the new administrator at Auglaize Acres.

Three bridges in Auglaize County were scheduled to be replaced in 1989. Two of the bridges were on Ohio 65 and the third was on Ohio 67.

Minster Mayor Theodore Purpus was sworn in during a special session of the Minster Village Council. Purpus, a former mayor, defeated incumbent Elmer A. Weaver during November’s General Election.

The Anna Rockets used a last-second shot to defeat the New Bremen Cardinals 47-46 in boys basketball action.

Sidney Lehman Catholic took advantage of a cold-shooting fourth quarter for the Minster Wildcats to earn a 72-63 win.
