NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Cardinals softball team recovered from a shaky start and had an eight-run fifth inning to come back and defeat the Marion Local Flyers 15-12 in a MAC contest Monday at New Bremen.
“We gave them a five spot in the first inning,” Cardinals head coach Craig Griesdorn. “But we responded with three in the bottom of the first. They came back with six but we came back from an 11-3 deficit and the reason why we did that was that we cleaned up our errors and we put the ball in play.”
The key for the Cardinals was an eight run fifth inning. With one out, Meagan Brandt singled to left and scored on a double to center by Kirsten Miller. Rachel Parker came through with a single to left and went to second on a steal. With runners at second and third Gina Griesdorn laced a single to center bringing both runners home closing the score to 12-9.
MINSTER 13, COLDWATER 8
MINSTER — Coldwater appeared to dodge a bullet when it turned a double play on a line drive with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning against Minster.
Instead, two batters later Minster’s Stephanie Albers powered a pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam, helping spark Minster’s second comeback of the day in a 13-8 win on Monday.
Minster fell behind 6-0 before scoring seven runs in the bottom of the third to grab a brief lead.
Coldwater scored two in the top of the fourth to re-take the lead before Albers put the Wildcats up for good with her four-pointer.
Along with Albers’ 2-for-2 night.
Marissa Conrad went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in for Minster.
Kayla Richard earned the win in the pitching circle.
Minster is back in Midwest Athletic Conference action on Thursday when it travels to Versailles at 5 p.m.
