St. Marys In Search For Season-Opening Opponent In 2020

Staff Writer

The St. Marys Roughriders football team will be in search of a new non-league opponent to open the 2020 football season and possibly beyond.

Since 1983 (with the exception of the 2007 and 2008 seasons) the Roughriders have opened every season against the Sidney Yellow Jackets.

But the Yellow Jackets are moving to the newly-developed Miami Valley League and will drop St. Marys from their schedule beginning in 2020.

The move to revive an old conference, leaves the Greater Western Ohio Conference in shambles with a number of other schools also disbanding from the conference.

The Yellow Jackets will instead play Bellefontaine, who has opened its season against Wapakoneta the last few years, in 2020.

The Redskins will also be in a search to find their 10th opponent in Week 1 of the season.

Sidney and St. Marys have played 65 times since they first met in 1900, with the Roughriders losing 39-32 at Sidney Memorial Stadium last season in the latest tradition of the non-league rivalry.

The Roughriders lead the all-time series 35-27-3.
