St. Marys wrestling splits WBL tri at Celina

CELINA — The St. Marys wrestling team cruised to a 63-21 win over Elida before Bath handed the Roughriders a 50-26 loss in the nightcap match at a Western Buckeye League super tri at Celina on Thursday night.

St. Marys overmatched Elida in the opener. Eddie Reier won a 9-5 decision over Elida’s Malik Morris to tie up the match 3-3. Austin Quellhorst at 126 pounds, Boston Hensley at 132 pounds and Patrick Day at 138 pounds won three straight via voids for the Roughriders, who took a 21-3 lead. St. Marys’ Adam Vogel pinned Micah Hartman at the 3:54 mark at 170 pounds as the Riders went up 39-9. St. Marys’ Justin Nedderman won a 5-0 decision over Elida’s Austin Selaggio to wrap up the match at 106 pounds for the 54-21 final. Jaden Heitkamp won via a void at 152 pounds along with Luke Lemmerman at 182 pounds and  Tate Carlon at 285 pounds.

St. Marys is now 5-3 in Western Buckeye League play. The Roughriders conclude this busy week with a trip to the east side of Toledo for the Joe Szymczak Royal Duals at Elmwood before competing at the regional level of the state duals tournament at Toledo Central Catholic next Wednesday at 5 p.m.. The Roughriders take on Wapakoneta in the single-elimination team tournament. If they beat Wapak, they’d wrestle the winner of Wauseon and Toledo Central Catholic later that evening.
