Vernon W. Barhorst, 86

Vernon W. Barhorst, 86, of South Paris Street, Minster, died at 5:28 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Minster.

He was born on April 30, 1926, in Fort Loramie, to Elizabeth Ernst and Frank F. Barhorst, and they preceded him in death.

On Nov. 19, 1949, at St. Michael Church in Fort Loramie, he married Treva P. (Zimmerman) Barhorst, and she survives.

He is also survived by seven children, V. Glen (Jeanne) Barhorst of Anna, Randall (Denise) Barhorst of Newport, Mark (Vicki) Barhorst of Fort Loramie, Elaine (Jay) Sargeant of Sidney, Theresa (John) Buschur of Anna, Lori Hausfeld of Springboro and Mitchell (Jill) Barhorst of Minster; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister; five sisters-in-law; friends of the family.

He was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Peggy and Jane Barhorst; a son-in-law; a granddaughter; five siblings.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II in the Pacific Theater and in Japan.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Minster, with the Rev. Rick Nieberding officiating. Burial will follow in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Newport.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kacie and Thomas Hausfeld Memorial Scholarship Fund or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
