OTTAWA —  The St. Marys wrestling team finished off an 8-1 run through the Western Buckeye League dual matches with a pair of wins against Ottawa-Glandorf and Van Wert on Thursday night at Robert J. Hermiller Gymnasium in Ottawa.

The Roughriders drubbed Ottawa-Glandorf 77-3 in the opening match and then beat Van Wert, 50-22, in their WBL dual match finale.

“We wrestled pretty well most of the time,” St. Marys head coach Larry Gruber said.

The Roughriders will compete in the Elmwood Duals on Saturday in its final prepwork for the WBL championship meet at Elida on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Gruber knows it will take a big day to knock off the favorites, the Wapakoneta Redskins. Wapak ran through the WBL schedule unbeaten.

“It’s all going to come down to the tournament,” Gruber said. “And I don’t know if anyone can touch Wapak. They’ve got enough solid kids to place. It’s going to come down to wherever you’re seeded and working through that bracket, and if you get beat you have to comeback and get a third-place. That’s what’s going to determine where we finish in the league.”

The Roughriders finished off the night with a 50-22 win over Van Wert.

St. Marys earned three pins against the Cougars.

Austin Quellhorst pinned Van Wert’s Andy Hammond at 126 pound at the 3:23 mark. The Roughriders’ Chris Swanson pinned Van Wert’s Quinton Rutkowski with just eight seconds left in the 138-pound match.
