MINSTER — One run was enough in a game matching up the two best pitchers in the Midwest Athletic Conference.
Minster’s Marissa Conrad ripped an RBI single over the third base bag off Parkway’s Sierra Fent in the bottom of the third inning for what proved to be the game-winning — and lone — run batted in the Wildcats’ 1-0 win over Parkway on Wednesday night at Four Season’s Park.
Minster pitcher Kayla Richard got the better of Parkway’s ace with a four-hit, six-strikeout shutout in a showdown between pitchers who were both First Team All-MAC selections as juniors in 2013.
Fent only allowed three hits and struck out nine Minster hitters for a Parkway team that reached the state semifinals a season ago.
“That was just a heck of a game,” said Minster head coach Scott Robinson, who coaches Fent during the summer. “Sierra is a great, great pitcher and a great kid who comes from a great family. We looked forward to this challenge tonight and Kayla pitched a great game tonight and hit her spots.”
The Wildcats (5-0, 1-0 MAC) pushed across the winning run in the third. Ninth-place hitter Kathy Prenger singled before Richard bounced into a fielders’ choice. Richard stole second, and after a a pop up to second base for the second out, Conrad delivered the clutch RBI hit to left field that allowed Richard to wheel around third and home for the run and a 1-0 lead.
“We just knew if we could get a runner or two on, we could pressure the defense or something. We were able to get someone on and Marissa came up with a huge base hit.”
