After two failed tries, the New Knoxville Rangers varsity boys basketball team finally got their elusive 1,000th victory in program history, defeating the St. Marys Roughriders 51-50 Tuesday night at the Barn.

With 16.9 seconds remaining and trailing 50-49, the Rangers called timeout to set up the game-winning shot.

Nick Topp saw an opening through the lane and put the ball in with 6 seconds left to give the Rangers a 51-50 lead. St. Marys then called a timeout, hoping to have another game-winning bucket like in Van Wert earlier this month.

Derek Jay got the ball and advanced to the top of the key, but was triple covered on the play and heaved a desperation shot that missed the rim.

The Rangers are the 53rd team in the state of Ohio to claim their 1,000th win and third team in the Midwest Athletic Conference to do so.

Topp ended with 12 points and Logan Leffel led the Rangers with 21 points. Jay led the Roughriders, who have lost three of their last four games, with 15 points. Austin Wilker added 10.
