St. Marys diver Alison Sandberg wanted to have one more chance to make a splash in the C.T. Branin Natatorium swimming pool one last time.

Mission accomplished

For the second straight season, Sandberg has qualified for state for one last chance to dive in Canton while another senior in TJ Mele will be making his first trip to Canton after qualifying in the boys' portion of the dive meet.

The senior diver Sandberg — who qualified for the state diving meet last season in Canton for the first time — finished eighth overall with 358.25 points on Wednesday in the Northwest Ohio District Swimming and Diving Meet for Division II girls at Bowling Green State University.

The top nine divers advance to the C.T. Branin Natatorium on Feb. 22.

Sandberg was seeded 14th in the district meet.

At her first trip to Canton last season, Sandberg — who came in seeded 18th — finished 23rd overall with 137.25 points. As a sophomore, Sandberg missed the trip to state by three spots at districts.

This will be Mele's first and only trip to state competition as he finished ninth at BGSU on Wednesday with 324.70 points.

Mele finished 12th place overall a season ago as a junior with 332.75 points.
