Schmidt Named New Bremen Football Coach

Staff Writer

NEW BREMEN — Chris Schmidt was named the next head football coach at New Bremen on Wednesday night.

Schmidt is the former head coach at his alma mater Bellefontaine from 2010 to 2012 before his contract was not renewed following a 7-22 run with the Chieftans.

Schmidt is a 2000 Wittenberg grad, a co-captain and three-year letterwinner at the tight end position for the Tigers. Schmidt served two stints as the tight ends coach at the university  earning three letters for the Tigers.

As a high school player at Bellefontaine, Schmidt played on both sides of the ball for a Chieftan team that made its first-ever playoff appearance in 1995.

Schmidt’s task will be to resuscitate a New Bremen football program that hasn’t won a game in more than two seasons — a 24-game losing streak dating back to Week 6 of the 2012 season.

Former head coach Jason McGaharan left the program to join Matt Burgbacher’s staff at Troy.
