St. Marys baseball sweeps two at Versailles to move to 7-1

VERSAILLES  —  The St. Marys baseball team got a pair of complete games on the mound and never trailed during a road doubleheader sweep of Versailles on Saturday. Brandon Coffey and Tristan Becker both went the distance in 4-1 and 6-2 victories.

St. Marys improved to 7-1 with the wins and will host Shawnee in a Western Buckeye League contest on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Coffey twirled a four-hit complete game, striking out five and walking just one while giving up one run. Tristan Becker, Nathan Wilker and Jared Knous each collected two hits, while Becker and Knous drove in runs. Dirk Fenwick scored two runs for St. Marys. Zack Wilker and Isaac Fitzgerald each scored a run.

Giganet drove in Versailles’ lone run in the bottom of the sixth before Coffey finished off his gem on the mound.

St. Marys took a 3-0 lead with two in the fourth and another run in the fifth.

Becker was nearly as good on the mound in a 6-2 win in the other game as a consistent strike thrower. Becker gave up two runs while scattering six hits with three strikeouts and a walk. He finished off the Tigers in a tidy 79 pitches — with 65 percent of those being strikes.

Nathan Vogel and Fitzgerald both had three-hit games. Josh Young and Fitzgerald both drove in two runs for the Roughriders.

St. Marys scored a run in the top of the first and blew the game open with three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Versailles scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh with runs batted in by Rutschilling and Moorman.
