The St. Marys Roughriders have not seen live pitching in exactly one week, but when they finally did see live pitching Tuesday night, they most likely hoped for another postponement.

Pitching a complete game two-hit shutout, Van Wert's Caleb Fetzer kept the Roughriders' bats quiet as his offense scored four runs — three by walks — in a 4-0 Van Wert victory in Western Buckeye League action at KC Geiger Park.

St. Marys' starting pitcher Chase Roop took the loss, pitching five and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits and issuing five walks.

Three of those five walks issued by Roop, scored for the Cougars.

But it was also the pitching performance of Fetzer that played a big factor in the Roughriders' third straight loss and second WBL defeat in as many games.

Fetzer pitched a 1-2-3 inning in four of his seven frames, allowing just two leadoff men, while fanning eight Roughriders on the night.

The Cougars struck first in the opening frame with a leadoff walk by Justice Tussing, who scored on a Fetzer RBI single. However, Van Wert put the game away in the fourth behind Fetzer's strong performance.

Josh Braun singled up the middle with one out in the inning, but the Cougars loaded the bases on back-to-back walks with two outs and scoring in a run when Jacob Covey drew a walk, scoring Braun to take a 2-0 lead.

Tussing then lined a single to left field to cash in Ryan McCracken and Nick Gutierrez to extend the Cougars' lead to 4-0.

With that cushion, Fetzer cruised, allowing just four base runners — one reaching on an error — and no runner getting past second base.
