Nineteen stranded runners, five errors and just three runs to show for it.

But that third run was a wild one.

In extra innings softball, the New Bremen Cardinals are Division IV district champs, walking off on a wild pitch by Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year Haley Hawk in a 2-1 victory over Parkway on Friday.

The Cardinals (16-5) will play Houston on Thursday at Centerville. New Bremen defeated Houston for its first win of the season back in March.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, leadoff hitter Chloe Schwartz reached base on a fielder’s choice, eliminating pinch runner Molly Smith at second.

Alyse Clune then whacked the ball in between first and second base, allowing Schwartz to scamper all the way to third base, where Bailey Strickler’s tag was late.
Hawk then intentionally walked Debbie Paul to load the bases with one out for Sophie Fox.

Fox never lifted her bat off her shoulders, except to celebrate when Hawk’s first offering was wild, skipping pass catcher Alisa Gray as Schwartz came bearing down third to score the game-winning run.

It is the first district title for the Cardinals since 2007 and just their third such title with their first coming in 2005.
